Some dates of events and deadlines may have passed. This information is left posted so that underclassmen can see the opportunities that may be available to them.

Pickens County Youth Board is a leadership group of high school students whose mission is to educate the community on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse as well as to provide drug free activities for the youth of the community, all while being role models to those around them.  Another goal of the Youth Board is to provide its members with leadership skills that they will carry with them throughout their lives.  

 

Students interested in becoming members of the youth board can download an application at http://bhspcprevention.wixsite.com/pcyb or see Mrs. Burgess or Mrs. Latham for an application.  The deadline is Friday, May 26, 2017.

Any students interested in a 5 day leadership conference are encouraged to consider attending the Broyhill Leadership Conference.  There are two options June 25-29 at Wingate Univ and July 9-13 at Queens Univ both in NC  This camp is very affordable due to generosity of the Broyhill Family Foundation. and other sponsors.  The cost is $300 and you can register or get more information at www.broyhill-leadership.org.  Students may also see Mrs. Latham for more about this opportunity!
                                                                                                                                       

2017 Summer Transportation Institute
The purpose of STI is to create awareness and expose high school students to career opportunities in the transportation industry.  The program is a four week residential program scheduled for June 4-June 29, 2017.
The application deadline is April 30, 2017.

Interested students should see Mrs. Burgess or Mrs. Latham for an application.

Rising juniors and seniors are invited to consider the 2017 SC Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference which will be at Newberry College June 11-14, 2017.  Activities will include leadership programs, Ag Olympics, team building and more.  Interested students should see Mrs. Latham or Burgess for more information. 
                                                                                                                                                     


The BMW Scholars Program
 is an apprenticeship  program that partners with local area technical colleges allowing students interested in manufacturing related degrees to attend class full-time while working part-time at BMW.  BMW provides tuition assistance each semester and a competitive part-time wage while the student is enrolled and participating in the Program.  Interested students should reserve a space in one of their information sessions to be held at TCTC.  The dates are listed below.  Students should call 646-1577 or 646-1573 or email cgarris3@tctc.edu to reserve your space.

Attention Juniors:  The Emerging Public Leaders (EPL) program is looking for rising high school seniors (current juniors) who are striving to become leaders and improve their communities. EPL, which includes a residential week on the Furman campus (June 18 – 23) and a school-year long service component, is free of charge to all current juniors who are selected to participate.

All students and families in our communities are invited to attend the Steppin' It Up event to help prevent the use of underage alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by our youth.  There will be a powerful presentation by international speaker, Mr. Shird, on Friday, March 31 6:30-8:30pm at the Liberty Civic Auditorium.  Then on Saturday, April 1st there will also be a youth only dialogue time at Gettys Middle School  when youth will be able to talk openly about this topic with Mr. Shird. See the LHS facebook page for a flyer about both of these segments of this event.

Seniors, 
Blanchard Machinery Company, the Caterpillar heavy equipment and engine dealer for the state of South Carolina is looking for students to participate in an educational and employment opportunity – the Caterpillar Dealer Academy.  This academy includes student taking classes at  Florence Darlington Technical College as well as participating in a paid internship.  For more information on program eligibility and how to apply, see Mrs. Burgess or Mrs. Latham.

 
Students, summer is fast approaching, and Clemson University Summer Scholars is offering fun and educational residential programs in June, July an August for students entering 7th - 12th grade in the fall.  Program offerings range from Engineering and Biology to Audio Engineering and Music Production and many more diverse programs.  To find out more, stop by the guidance office to pick up a brochure or visit www.clemson.edu/summer-scholars/.


Junior Leadership Pickens County is accepting applications for the 2017 JLPC program from high school juniors in Pickens County.  This is a leadership development program for juniors in our county.  Accepted students will develop leadership skills, meet with community leaders, and build their college resumes.  Interested juniors should see a counselor for more information and to receive a Student Information Packet before Friday, Oct 14. 

Benedict College will host its Fall Open House Program on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 8:00 am - 12:00 noon.  A free lunch will be provided for all Open House guests immediately foolowing the program.  Free tickets for the Benedict College vs. Point University football game are available upon the program's conclusion.  For information or to register please call 803-705- 4910.


 
WISE CHOICE is a highly successful program designed to allow  top performing female high school juniors and seniors experience life as Clemson University engineering or science majors.  Activities include a hands on engineering and science demonstration and an information session, where participants will hear from representatives of Clemson's Admissions and Finanical Aid Offices.  The program is $20 which covers meals and a CU t-shirt.  The program will be held on November 11 from 9:00 - 4:00.  To be eligible students must be juniors or seniors, must be enrolled in a college prep program and have a grade point average of atleast 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  Eligible students are selected on a first come, first serve basis determined by the date and time the applications arrive.  See Mrs. Burgess or Mrs. Latham if you are interested.



PEER SnapShot is a program designed to offer top performing underrepresented high school juniors and seniors a chance to see what life is like as a CLemson University engineering or science major.  Activites include a hands on engineering and scince demonstration, a student panel, and an information session, where participants will hear from representatives of Clemson's Admissions and Financial Aid Offices.  There is a $20 fee to help cover parking, meals and a program t-shirt.  The program will be held on November 14.  To be eligible students must be juniors or seniors, must be enrolled in a college prep program and have a grade point average of atleast 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  Eligible students are selected on a first come, first serve basis determined by the date and time the applications arrive.  See Mrs. Burgess or Mrs. Latham if you are interested.
